Profile: Maryam Aghvami

maryamMaryam Aghvami is a reporter and producer with Voice of America and a freelance journalist with Canadian Broadcasting Cooperation in Toronto. She has worked on a number of documentaries with the CBC's The Fifth Estate and Disclosure, as well as different CBC Radio shows, has contributed to other CBC TV current affairs programs such as National, Foreign Assignment, Iraq war Investigative Unit. On May 2005, she won "Outstanding Newcomers Achievement Award".

Maryam is president of Journalists in Exile and a member of Canadian Journalists for Freedom of Expression (CJFE). She also serves as Senior Vice President of Ethnic Media Press Council of Canada.

She is also an active member of with Women in Film and Television, Human Rights Watch, United Nations Association, Association of Women in International Development (AWID).

Maryam has worked with the Reuters news agency in Iran and extensively covered the Iranian presidential and parliamentary elections in 2000 and 2001.

She was a producer, translator and office manager for German Radio and TV (ARD) from 1998 to 2000 and was an associate producer for documentaries on Iraqi and Afghan refugees in Iran.

She covered the Iranian parliamentary election on February 2000 and was a freelance journalist, researcher and translator for The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The New York Times, Die Welt and Corriera Dela Serra.

She served as translator and research officer in the Australian Embassy in Tehran from 1996-98. She also worked as simultaneous and consecutive interpreter for international conferences and seminars.

Maryam was the translator and publisher of Iran Weekly Press Digest from 1998 - 2000. Aghvami also wrote and translated for more than 10 local newspapers and magazines, which Iranian authorities all closed down for political reasons.
